The Long 2024: A Year of Change, Creativity, and Letting Go

2024 was a year that felt like a bridge between different phases of life, filled with change, creativity, and a sense of letting go. As I reflect on it, it stands out as a period of growth and transformation, both personally and professionally.

Our time in Austin was coming to an end, and 2024 marked our last full year there. The uncertainty of where we’d go next and when we’d leave hung in the air, creating a unique sense of liminality. It was a year that tested our adaptability and forced us to confront the unknown.

On the personal front, I continued to deepen my journey into fatherhood. It was a year of learning, love, and countless precious moments with my family. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. I also experienced the ebb and flow of creativity, finding my groove only to lose it again. However, it was also a year of supporting my partner, Angie, as she had her own creative awakening. Watching her progress on her memoir was inspiring, and I’m excited to see her book published in Chinese later this year.

One of the biggest highlights of 2024 was Angie getting U.S. Citizenship. It was a long and arduous process that began in 2018 when we decided to get married. From the marriage to applying for a green card, moving to the U.S., and navigating the complex bureaucracy, it felt like we had finally crossed the finish line. This achievement not only brought us a sense of relief but also a newfound freedom and excitement for the future.

Professionally, 2024 was a productive year. I started and finished my second book, Good Work, which was a significant accomplishment. It required me to break out of my old working habits and find a new rhythm. I began working outside the house for the first time in years and committed to a regular writing schedule. This meant sacrificing some of my other projects, such as my podcast and newsletter, but it was a necessary step to focus on my “good work.”

I also had some exciting opportunities in the publishing world. I switched to a new agent for my foreign rights, which led to translation deals in several countries, including India, France, Russia, and China. I also achieved one of my long – standing goals of getting republished in Taiwan. Hosting my first book launch event in Austin and co – hosting an event in San Francisco were also memorable experiences that allowed me to connect with my readers and celebrate my work.

Looking back on the year, I also had some important reflections. I realized that I needed to find a better balance between my “good work” and my “supporting activities.” While these activities are fun and energizing, they can sometimes distract me from my main creative projects. I’m still working on finding the right balance, but I’m excited to continue experimenting and growing.

Another important lesson was the need for self – care. I’ve always been someone who puts others first, but this year, I learned the importance of taking time for myself. My solo trips to Boulder, Los Angeles, and San Francisco were not only rejuvenating but also helped me realize that I need to make self – care a priority. I’m looking forward to exploring more ways to take care of myself in the future, such as going on a meditation retreat.

In conclusion, 2024 was a year of growth, change, and learning. It was a year that tested my limits and pushed me out of my comfort zone. But it was also a year of many blessings and achievements. As I look ahead to the future, I’m filled with excitement and anticipation for what’s to come. I’m ready to embrace the unknown and continue on this journey of creativity and self – discovery.
